CHAPTER THIRTEEN

DOUBLE TROUBLE

It was December 24th, Christmas Eve morning, and I was still in bed, exhausted. The night couldn’t have seemed any longer. I’m not sure how much I slept, but it definitely wasn’t a lot. Mostly I had been lying there again, staring up at the ceiling, thinking about everything that had happened. Warlocks, bunnies, and now the letters Tommy had found at Herb’s house. There were just too many thoughts running through my mind to really doze off.

Apparently, just guessing by the sounds of the snores, the same problem hadn’t affected Tommy. He’d slept like a baby and was now wide awake, pacing the room, while my eyes felt like there were two weights attached, trying to pull them closed.

Mom and Dad had taken Abby out for last-minute Christmas shopping, but I was too tired to go. Besides, I wanted to give them every opportunity to get me a phone without worrying about me being there. Not that they’d take advantage of it, but this was really my last shot.

As it was, I had a feeling that Christmas was going to be horrible. It wasn’t even here yet, and I already knew how it was going to go. My gift would probably be more therapy sessions with Herb, which was just about the only thing they could’ve given me that would’ve made the usual socks and underwear look great in comparison.

The more I thought about everything, the more depressed I was getting, which in turn made my headache pound. It already felt like it was going to explode. All I wanted to do was sleep. Unfortunately, all Tommy wanted to do was be Tommy, which even on the best of days was never a good thing, but today, it was fast getting on my nerves.

“I think we have to burn him,” Tommy said.

“What?”

“Herb. I think we have to set him on fire.”

“Are you psychotic? I’m not burning anybody.”

“But that’s how you kill a warlock. I’ve been researching it.”

“That’s how you kill anyone!” I said.

He paused a moment. “Yeah, but it especially works on warlocks.”

“You’re a moron.”

“I don’t see you coming up with anything.”

“I’m thinking.”

“Yeah, while you’re busy thinking, Herb and Mr. Flopsy-Ears are right across the street making plans!”

“Plans for what?”

Tommy thought a second. “He’s a warlock—what kind of plans do you think they make?”

“To turn us into mice and have cats eat us?”

Tommy stared blankly at me. “Do you hear how dumb you sound when you say things like that? You don’t play around with warlocks. They’re evil. They want to kill us or make us their slaves or even eat us. Maybe all three. They use kids in soup, you know.”

“No, they don’t.”

Tommy nodded. “Yes, they do. Who’s the expert here?”

“I don’t think there’s a right answer to that question.”

“Well, unless you come up with a better idea …”

I was about to answer when my thoughts were interrupted by a shadow crossing in front the blinds. A shadow with two long ears!

I bolted upright in my bed.
